Pre-Purchase Survey

A Pre-Purchase Marine Survey is strongly recommended when buying either a new or used vessel. This inspection provides a comprehensive evaluation of the vessel’s overall condition, operational systems, and fair market value, allowing prospective buyers to make informed decisions prior to purchase.

The survey typically includes a sea trial and haul-out, permitting inspection of underwater components such as the hull bottom, propellers, shafts, struts, rudders, and through-hull fittings. Together, these steps allow for the most thorough assessment of the vessel’s structural integrity and mechanical condition.

* Haul-out scheduling and associated costs are the responsibility of the survey requestor.

Major Areas of Inspection

During a pre-purchase survey, the following vessel components and systems are evaluated:

  • Hull structure, decks, and superstructure

  • Deck hardware, fittings, and accessories

  • Interior spaces and accommodations

  • Propulsion machinery and drivetrain components

  • Fuel tanks, water tanks, and associated systems

  • Electrical systems (AC and DC)

  • Sanitation and plumbing systems

  • Steering systems and controls

  • Ground tackle and anchoring equipment

  • Navigation electronics and onboard instrumentation

  • Safety equipment and regulatory compliance items

Survey Report

Following completion of the inspection, clients typically receive a comprehensive Marine Survey Report within approximately three (3) business days.

The report provides a clear, structured evaluation of the vessel and organizes findings into the following categories:

  • Safety & Compliance – Items affecting vessel safety or compliance with recognized marine standards and regulations.

  • Relevant Items Requiring Attention – Deficiencies, maintenance concerns, or conditions that may affect reliability, longevity, or value.

  • Surveyor Observations – Noteworthy conditions observed during the inspection that may be useful to the owner or buyer but may not require immediate corrective action.

Each finding includes a clear, concise recommendation for resolution, enabling buyers, owners, insurers, and lenders to easily understand the significance of each item and the appropriate corrective action.

The report also includes an estimate of Fair Market Value and is professionally formatted to meet the documentation requirements commonly requested by insurance companies and financial institutions.

By providing a detailed and objective assessment of the vessel, the survey enables buyers to proceed with confidence in negotiations and purchasing decisions.
